International Benchmarking

The NHS Benchmarking Network have worked in partnership with 16 countries to explore comparative metrics for both Adult Mental Health Services and Child and Adolescent Mental Health services (CAMHS). The work has been undertaken since 2016 with our most recent report published in October 2022. The project provides an overview of mental health services provision across a number of countries with highly developed healthcare systems. We explore mental health provision across all age groups and consider contextual factors such as health system investment levels, funding arrangements, access to care, and the service models used. The reports also summarise elements of country mental health strategies and identifies innovation in service delivery. The benchmarking analysis also profiles variation across countries in how inpatient and community based care is delivered, alongside other key issues including the mental health workforce and outcome measures.

The work is conducted in partnership with the International Initiative for Mental Health Leadership (IIMHL) who provide a platform for ongoing collaboration and learning across countries. Participant countries welcome the opportunity to explore the different approaches to delivering mental health care and use the analysis to explore variation and confirm areas of good practice.
